Factor Explorer

Construct as many rectangles as you can

Generate some number of small squares by either by clicking the Number button and
entering a value, or by clicking Random.
Explore the factors of your value by seeing how many ways you can arrange the squares into a rectangle
by dragging the small red square. Use the tally area to keep count.

You can also drag the squares to change their position, without changing their shape.

*Start with the squares in a line along the top, then gradually make the shape narrower by dragging.*

This activity is designed to reinforce a *rectangular array* visualisation of factorisation.
While dragging the shape and watching the alignment of the small squares,
the difference between the situation where there
is an even division and where there is not should be particularly clear.
Also apparent should be the special nature of primes — no matter
how the shape is adjusted, the small squares never line up into
a rectangular grid.
