Drag the endpoints to explore a variety of line segments. Use the buttons below to see how you can use rightangle triangles and Pythagoras' theorem to solve problems relating to line segments.

Interactively study line segments

• Drag either of the blue points to adjust the segment.
• The resulting change in the segment depends on the constraint setting:
• None
The points may be dragged anywhere,
X
The x coordinate of each point is fixed, so the allowed movement is only up or down,
Y
The y coordinate of each point is fixed, so the allowed movement is only left or right,
X + Y
The point moves only along the line extended from the current segment.
• Clicking and dragging the line itself allows translation of the segment.
• If Triangle is selected, the rise and run are shown in green. The length of the segment is shown on the plot as a decimal and above the plot as an exact value.
• If Extend is selected, the line segment is extended into a line, and its equation is displayed and updated as points are moved.
• Click and hold the chart background to bring up a magnifier.
