Target Value

Can you hit the target?

In this game, each tile corresponds to a particular mathematical operation.
When you drag them to the right hand column of the table, they act on the
value in the left hand column. The object of the game is to make the final
value equal to the target value.

Once you have placed a tile, it can be removed using the Undo button, or the table cells themsleves can be swapped by dragging. Press Restart to try again, or New for completely new tiles.

There are three levels of difficulty, with each increase in difficulty meaning more tiles and a greater variety of values.

Hint: the target value will always be either zero, or either the highest or lowest value possible. Try and use this knowledge to help decide the best way to place the operation tiles.

This game encourages understanding the nature of the basic arithmetic operations: how they affect value, how they interact. It can also be used to explore the implications of the order of operations, and why it is so important.

Other aspects of number sense that can be developed through playing this game include the properties of zero and negative numbers.
