Book Collection
Apple II series user manuals
- Apple IIc Manuals, Complete Set, 1984
Specifically: Apple Presents the Apple IIc: An Interactive Owner's Guide, Monitor IIc User's Manual,
System Utilities, Setting Up Your Apple IIc.
- Apple IIe Reference Manual (2 different versions) 1984
These two volumes are completely different books, but cover essentially the same material. They
both refer to the standard Apple IIe, and not the Platinum IIe or the Enhanced IIe.
Apple II programming books
- Apple II User's Guide by Lon Poole with Martin McNiff and Steven Cook, Osborne/McGraw-Hill, 1981
An excellent, readable introduction to Apple II general use and programming
- Apple Logo: Introduction to Programming through Turtle Graphics by Cynthia Solomon, Logo Computer Systems, 1982
- Apple IIe Programmer's Reference Guide by David Heisermanm, SAMS, 1984
Macintosh programming books from Apple:
- Macintosh 68000 Development System (MDS), Pre-release documentation, 1984
Typewritten draft documentation for the initial release of MDS - the first native development environment for the Macintosh (assembly only).
- Inside Macintosh, Volumes I to V, Addison-Wesley, 1985/1988
The original and official (albeit late-coming) Macintosh programming reference from Apple, covering the Mac 128K and 512K in Volumes
I, II and III, the Mac Plus in Volume IV, and the Mac II and Mac SE in Volume V.
- New Inside Macintosh, Addison-Wesley, 1992 - Overview, Macintosh Toolbox Essentials, More Macintosh Toolbox, Memory, Files, Devices, Processes, Text, PowerPC System Software, Interapplication Communication, Operating System Utilities
After the 1600 page Inside Macintosh Volume 6 came out in 1991 covering System 7, Apple reorganised Inside Macintosh by topic, leading to the New Inside Macintosh series, of which I have the above 11 volumes in hardcopy. (They are all easily available electronically.)
- The Apple Numerics Manual, 2nd edition, Addison-Wesley, 1988
This book describes in detail the Standard Apple Numerics Environment for floating point calculations.
Other books about Macintosh programming and debugging:
- The Best of MacTutor by David Smith, volume 1 (1986)
- The Complete MacTutor by David Smith, volume 2 (1987)
A fascinating historical journey, and an invaluable resource for early Macintosh programming information.
These books contain articles from the first two volumes of MacTutor magazine, and give wonderful insight into the
nature of the early mac programming community. The MacTech/MacTutor magazine is still around, and the archives are
available online and searchable at http://www.mactech.com/, and
well worth a browse.
- Macintosh Programming Secrets by Scott Knaster, Addison-Wesley, 1988
- Macintosh Programming Secrets by Scott Knaster and Keith Rollin, 2nd edition, Addison-Wesley, 1992
- How to Write Macintosh Software by Scott Knaster, 2nd edition, Hayden, 1988
- How to Write Macintosh Software by Scott Knaster, 3nd Edition, Addison-Wesley, 1992
"How to Write Macintosh Software" is simply the best book on mac programming ever!!!
Full of invaluable information and tips, it is funny and extremely readable, and I have learnt an enormous amount from it over time.
Very highly recommended!
- Programming the Macintosh in Assembly Language by Steve Williams, Sybex, 1986
More of a 68000 assembly programming reference than a Macintosh programming reference, but interesting and valuable nonetheless.
- Macintosh Programming Primer: Inside the Toolbox Using Think C by Dave Mark and Cartwright Reed, Addison-Wesley, 1989.
- Macintosh C Programming Primer, Volume II: Mastering the Toolbox Using Think C by Dave Mark, Addison-Wesley, 1990.
These two book are the ones that got me started on Mac Programming. Although limited in scope, they provide
an excellent foundation for development of full-scale Macintosh applications.
- Programmer's Guide to MPW, Volume 1: Exploring the Macintosh Programmer's Workshop by Mark Andrews, Macintosh Inside Out,1991
- Programming QuickDraw by David Surovell, Frederick Hall and Konstantin Othmer, Macintosh Inside Out, 1991
- Debugging Macintosh Software with Macsbug by Konstantin Othmer and Jim Straus, Macintosh Inside Out, 1991
- Programming for System 7 by Gary Little and Tim Swihart, Macintosh Inside Out, 1991
There were a number of books in the Macintosh Inside Out Series, edited by Scott Knaster. They were good and informative references, but they did not match the consistent quality of the books Knaster actually authored.
Hardware repair books:
- Apple II Plus/IIe Troubleshooting and Repair Guide by Robert Brenner, SAMS, 1984
An excellent and detailed book on Apple II+ and Apple IIe hardware
- How to Repair and Maintain your Apple Computer by Gene Williams, Chilton, 1985
A promising title, but in most respects a disappointing book.
- Macintosh Repair and Upgrade Secrets by Larry Pina, Hayden Books, 1990
- The Dead Mac Scrolls by Larry Pina, Goldstein & Blair, 1992
These two Pina books are simply gold for any collector of early macs! They contain a wealth of
repair information, presented in an easy-to-read fashion, and have already proven very useful to me on many occasions.
General Apple and Macintosh Books:
- Shake Hands with the Apple IIe by Pam Kelly-Hartley and Joy McKneil, Pitman, 1984
- The Apple Macintosh Book by Cary Lu, 1st edition, Microsoft Press, 1984
The original edition of this book was released to coincide with the launch of the original Macintosh,
and in many ways reads like a User's Manual for the mac and the software available at the time. Although this means the presentation
is a little dry, it is nevertheless very historically interesting for the review it gives of the nature of computing at the time.
- The Apple Macintosh Book by Cary Lu, 4th edition, Microsoft Press, 1992
The 4th and final edition of this book covered System 7 and 21 models of Macintosh!
TRS-80/Z80 Books:
- User's Manual for Level 1 TRS-80 Micro Computer System by David Lien, Radio Shack, 1977
- TRS-80 Micro Computer System Technical Reference Manual, Radio Shack, 1978
- EDTASM Manual
- How to Program the Z80 by Rodnay Zaks, Sybex, 1980
- TRS-80 Assembly Language Proramming by William Barden Jr, Radio Shack, 1979
- TRS-80 Assembly Language by Hubert Howe Jr, Prentice-Hall, 1981
- BASIC Faster and Better and Other Mysteries by Lewis Rosenfelder, IJG, 1981
- Intel 8080/8085 Assembly Language Programming, Radio Shack, 1975
- Z80 Assembly Language Programming, Zilog, 1978
Just waiting for a machine to use them on.
Popular Histories of Personal Computing:
- Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution by Steven Levy, Updated edition, Penguin, 2001
A truly fascinating presentation of the evolution of computing from the early 50s to the late 70s
- Insanely Great: The Life and Times of Macintosh, the Computer That Changed Everything by Steven Levy, 2nd edition, Penguin, 2000
Covers the history of the graphical user interface as well as the making of the macintosh. The second
edition goes as far as the release of the early iMacs.
- Accidental Empires: How the Boys of Silicon Valley Make Their Millions, Battle Foreign Competition, and Still Can't Get a Date by Robert X. Cringely, Collins, 1996.
This book covers the computer industry from the 70s to the 90s and is more humourous, but I find the material intrinsically less interesting than Hackers.
